Before:
Most of us watching Peacemaker season two had figured out that he was going to a Nazi parallel universe, specifically DC’s “Earth X.”
Online theories caught it pretty quick, and, honestly, it is sort of cliche anyway. The writing on this show has been really good so far, but the old evil universe, (Mirror Universe), is nothing groundbreaking to say the least.
In fact I was a little hesitant to even watch this season once it became clear it was going the multiverse direction. Marvel has kind of ruined that concept for me at this point.
But I am glad I have given it a chance so far, the sorry and characterizations have remained solid. The story of Chris searching for both genuine self worth and validation is a strong theme, that humanizes the “superhero” character in a really relatable way.
But this episode is going to be the one where they reveal the dark twist of the alternate reality he’s in. The trailers reveal that, which is no big deal since we all figured it out anyway. I think it’s really important that they stick the landing with this universe. If things continue to feel original despite the cliche overall season plot concept, then great. If not, then it’s a real bummer to be sure.
I am writing this first half of this review before seeing the episode. Afterwards, I’ll record my reaction to it.
Afterwards:
It was a decent episode. They handled the reveal fairly well. They didn’t do that thing where we see things wrong that the characters couldn’t see and hold on to the suspense for too long. It felt pretty organic, as far as such things can be.
My real critique is this though: the episode was short. It was only like 30 minutes long. It also felt short, which can be a good sign since it means it left us in suspense. But it also kind of felt like they were drawing things out. Oh well, what the fuck can you do? Not a bad way to handle the plot twist that everybody saw coming. Not too much cringe as far as these things go.
Now we just have to see how they wrap the season.
